THE WILL COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS WARNING CITIZENS
TO BEWARE OF IRS PHONE SCAMS
Its tax time again, and with that comes an increase of complaints from residents, to the Will County Sheriff’s Office, regarding Internal Revenue Service phone scams. Criminals impersonating IRS agents make unsolicited calls to unknowing victims who are threatened into paying a bogus tax bill.
The Sheriff’s Office is warning citizens to be aware of these scams…Don’t become a victim!
Scam artists use various schemes and aggressive threats in order for citizens to be frightened of criminal action against them and for citizens to act quickly in order for the scammer to profit. Some tactics used are threats of immediate arrest or court action; telling you that you’re entitled to a large refund, they just need your bank account number; leave you “Urgent” callback requests; threats of deportation or revoking your driver’s license; etc. Scammers often alter caller ID numbers to make it look like the call is from the IRS. The callers use fake titles and fake badge numbers to appear legitimate. They may use the victim’s name, address and other personal information to make the call sound official. But beware!
