Phone Scam Alert - "Can You Hear Me?"

The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers of a phone scam.

Consumers are reporting that they are receiving phone calls about vacation packages, cruises, warranties, and other big ticket items. Here's how it works: You get a call from someone who almost immediately asks, "Can you hear me?" The person may also say something like, "I'm having trouble with my headset." Their goal is to get you to answer "Yes", which most people instinctively do. What may be happening however is the conversation may be recorded and your "yes" answer can later be edited to make it sound like you authorized a major purchase. 


  • Screen all calls- don't answer unfamiliar numbers. If it's someone trying to reach you they will leave you a message and you can call them back.
  • Regularly check your bank / credit card statements and phone bills for unauthorized charges
  • Report any suspicious calls (include the phone number) to or consider joining the Do Not Call Register at
