HOMER'S
ROLL OF HONOR
Being the military record of her sons who have served the country in the volunteer armies of the republic
Introductory
In behalf of the committee appointed by the Homer Town Meeting of April 1901, a few words of explanation are due. In addition to the record of service in “the civil war”, a list is also given of those volunteer soldiers who served in the Mexican war, the Indian wars, the war of 1812, and the one soldier of the revolution, (that remarkable character David Kennison,) who for a time made his home within our borders. It was clearly the desire of the people of Homer, to preserve a correct and as nearly as possible, a perfect record of the military life of her volunteer soldiers, especially to rescue from oblivion the fast-fading annals of those who periled their all to preserve the integrity of that union, which was formed by the wisdom, and cemented by the blood of “the fathers of the republic.”
It is not claimed that the sons of Homer did more than their duty. For in that hour of “supreme peril”, the demands of duty were measured only by the utmost limit of human ability and human endurance, yet it may truly be said that Homer did her full duty. And she had no occasion to blush for her sons.
Unflinchingly they faced the dangers of “the field”, without complaint the hardships of “the camp”.
Weary and footsore in burning heat and pelting storms, they followed “the old flag”, as Israel of old followed the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night; little need be said in praise of their patriotism.
They have written that record with their life blood. At Ft. Donaldson, Dollivar, Stone River, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Atlanta, Drury’s Bluff, Deep Bottom and Franklin, they died for their country and their flag.
In the 20th Ill. at Ft. Donaldson, under Gen. Grant, they helped to win the first great national victory, and in the 39th Ill. under the same great leader, they stood in that serried line before which the hitherto unconquered army of North Virginia threw down its arms in final surrender.
In preparing this record we have found much difficulty from the fact that many men who went from Homer were credited to other localities. And in the labor of hunting up these scattered records, we have been assisted by the extended efforts of our former townsman, Capt. Amos Savage, who as a “labor of love” for his “old comrades” had gathered valuable data, which was cheerfully placed at our disposal.
It is believed that all of our soldiers in former wars have now “past away”, while of the heroes of the “civil war” but few are left among us.
“They sleep their last sleep; they have fought their last battle; no sound shall awake them to glory again.”
