As part of the regular maintenance of the native planting areas within Heritage Park, developed with the assistance of funding by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, through their Section 319 grant program, the Village’s maintenance contractor will be performing a prescribed burn, within the next several weeks.
Prescribed burns are an essential part of maintaining the naturalized areas within Heritage Park. The native plants that were planted in 2019 have evolved in an area where fire was once common and this process helps to maintain a healthy ecosystem. The prescribed burn will help to control weed and invasive species within the prairie while leaving the native species unharmed and ready for another great growing season in 2022. The Village is working with the Pizzo Group, an Ecological Restoration contractor, to complete a controlled burn of the Heritage Park prairies. The burn has been permitted through the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and has been coordinated with the Fire Department. The date of the burn is highly dependent on weather but is expected to be completed prior to April 30th. If you would like a call prior to the burn, please reach out to the Village or call Pizzo’s prescribed fire hotline at 815-495-5008 and leave a message with your NAME, COMMUNITY NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER and a short description of any questions or concerns.
