As of Saturday, January 23, 2021 10:00AM the snow is forecasted to begin sometime late morning on Monday, January 25th. For the past few days every area forecast (issued every 6 hours) has increased the amount of snowfall that this event will produce. Computer models have it any where from 7 to 12 inches of snow over a 24-hour period. This variation is due to the forecasted “tracking” of the storm. Some areas will get the 10-12 inches of snow that his storm will likely produce. We’ll have a better idea of just how much we’ll get as the event nears.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS EVENT
The biggest problem we will face with this event is parked cars. Now that many residents are working from home, the number of parked cars in the subdivisions has greatly increased. During previous winter snow and ice events this season there were severe areas we were not able to service. Drivers were reluctant to drive between lines of cars parked on both sides of the street with a wide truck (most have a side “wing” blade) on icy roads. This cannot happen with a snow event of this magnitude. It will prevent residents from traveling and first responders need access to the entire community at all times. Parked cars will be ticketed and/or towed if the snow does in fact accumulate over the 2-inch requirement in the Village ordnance. Please alert you neighbors and help keep the roads safe for residents, school busses and first responders.
Forecasts call for temperatures to remain at 29 to 31 degrees throughout the event. This will result in a heavy, wet snow that will be difficult to plow and shovel. Residents should not over exert themselves while shoveling. Forecasters often call these events “widow-makers”! We want all of you here on Super Bowl Sunday so please be cautious when shoveling.
Plowing a wet and heavy snowfall can be difficult. It builds up on the plow because at slow speeds it doesn’t slid off easily and then it steers the truck much like a rudder steers a boat. Drive too fast and it takes out a lot of mailboxes. Weak and frail mailboxes are doomed! Sometimes the snow will “roll” in front of the plow much like children roll snow to build a snowman. These 4-foot snow balls will end up in a driveway and NO, we don’t do that on purpose.
